Content & Relevance

Is your site worth visiting or coming back to? Who are you trying to attract to your website? Don't say 'everyone'--You need to narrow your focus down and identify exactly who would be interested in coming to your site and then put yourself in their shoes. Would they find what they are looking for on your site? Would they want to visit or come back?

Go through your site and make it the best user experience possible. The end goal should be to have a website that people would want to come visit and then bookmark. The more engaging your site is, the more likely people will talk about it, link to it, and keep coming back. Make your site relevant!

For Google, content is king! Google's mission is to retrieve the most relevant search results. Google does this through a complicated algorithm factoring in all sorts of things: your content, title, meta tags, links to your site, and much more. Nobody knows the exactly what the mix is though, except for Google--they keep that secret. In any case, Google has programs (called 'bots') which go through your site and look at all the content and other information. Thus, content is a major portion of how Google returns the most relevant results.

It's not just Google though, all the search engines will 'scrub' your website. Keep in mind though, that this is done automatically through their programs and each one does it a little differently. So you'll want to optimize your content so that it'll match up better with what people are looking for. Figure out what keywords and key phrases that people will be searching for and then use those keywords and key phrases throughout your content.

Next step: Titles & Meta Tags

Taking it to the next level: You may want to call in a professional content writer to help you with your content. They would be able to wordsmith your content to read well while still be loaded with keywords.
